Working Across the Nepal and Australia Time Gap

Working Across the Nepal and Australia Time Gap

Nepal and Australia are close enough in time to work together live, and far enough apart that you have to be deliberate about it. Handled well, the gap becomes an advantage: an Australian client sends a request at the end of their day and finds it done when they wake up.

The numbers

  • Nepal Time (NPT) is UTC+5:45 all year.
  • Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart are UTC+10 in winter and UTC+11 in daylight-saving time (first Sunday of October to first Sunday of April).
  • Brisbane stays on UTC+10 all year. Adelaide is UTC+9:30 or +10:30. Perth is UTC+8.

So a Sydney client's 9am to 5pm is 4:45am to 12:45pm in Nepal during the Australian summer, and 5:45am to 1:45pm in winter. Perth's 9am to 5pm is a comfortable 6:45am to 2:45pm in Nepal.

For freelancers: pick an overlap and advertise it

You do not need to match the whole Australian day. Two to three reliable hours of overlap are enough for most roles. A common pattern is 7am to 3pm Nepal time, which covers Australian late morning through the end of the day. Write your working hours in both time zones on your GigNepal profile and in every proposal. Reliability matters more than coverage; a client who knows you are always online 11am to 2pm AEST will plan around it.

For clients: batch requests at the end of your day

Send your notes, files and questions before you finish work. Your freelancer picks them up at the start of their day and you get results the next morning. For urgent items, agree on a channel and a response time in advance, for example "GigNepal chat, reply within one hour during overlap, otherwise next morning".

Meetings

Late morning Australian time is the sweet spot: it is early but reasonable in Nepal and avoids the Australian lunch hour. Keep a shared calendar in one time zone (usually the client's) and write both times in every invite. GigNepal's booking and chat tools show times in each user's own zone, which removes most mistakes.

Public holidays

Nepal's big holiday periods are Dashain and Tihar in October and November, and the Nepali new year in mid-April. Australia's are Christmas to late January, Easter, and a scatter of state holidays. Freelancers should list their unavailable dates on their profile a month ahead; clients should ask before committing a deadline that lands in Dashain week.

Written updates beat live chat

A short end-of-day summary, what was done, what is blocked, what is next, lets the other side act without a meeting. Across a time gap it is the single most useful habit either side can build.
